- ItemCAPACITY CHOICE OF DAMS UNDER RIVALRY USE AND EXTERNALITIES(2014-10-30) Pham Do KH; Houba H; Zhu XThis paper studies the relation between optimal dam capacity and water management under rivalry uses and externalities. We extend the hydropower generation model, based on Haddad (2011), by including the competing use of water resource, non-linear building cost of dam capacity and externalities in a welfare optimization model. We obtain the optimal dam capacity for multi-functional dams such as providing infrastructure for industrial and households water use, conjunctive use of hydropower generation and irrigation; storing water in the wet season for use in the dry season, and mitigating áooding damages. The optimal solution shows that optimal dam capacity is characterized by the marginal benefits of hydropower generation, the marginal costs of flooding damages, and the constraining factors. Moreover, the optimal water management can be achieved by using derived seasonal prices in a decentralized manner.
- ItemChina's Changing Alcohol Market and Need for an Enhanced Policy Response: A Narrative Review(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2022-05-11) Liu S; Huang F; Zhu X; Zhou S; Si X; Zhao Y; Liu Y; Zhang X; Casswell S; Tchounwou PBThis study describes trends in alcohol consumption in the context of an expanding commercial context, current policy responses, and flaws in relation to international best practice for alcohol control in China. We surveyed the literature and other documents in Chinese or English up to December 2020 on policy responses to alcohol consumption and harm, industry structure, and marketing practices in China. Databases searched included PubMed, China National Knowledge Internet, Wanfang Data, Web of Science, and Baidu Scholar. We also scanned the official websites of government organizations and gathered information using snowballing. We analyzed existing alcohol policy against evidence-based, cost-effective policies for reducing alcohol harm. Our findings show that although some restrictive policies have been enacted with potential impacts on alcohol harm, they are not comprehensive, and some are poorly executed. The long history of alcohol use remains an important element in alcohol consumption by the Chinese population. However, alcohol marketing and promotion, ease of access, and affordability have become increasingly prominent. The gaps identified in alcohol policy suggest improved strategies and measures to reduce the harmful use of alcohol are urgently needed in China.
- ItemInitialization-similarity clustering algorithm(Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, 2019-12) Liu T; Zhu J; Zhou J; Zhu Y; Zhu XClassic k-means clustering algorithm randomly selects centroids for initialization to possibly output unstable clustering results. Moreover, random initialization makes the clustering result hard to reproduce. Spectral clustering algorithm is a two-step strategy, which first generates a similarity matrix and then conducts eigenvalue decomposition on the Laplacian matrix of the similarity matrix to obtain the spectral representation. However, the goal of the first step in the spectral clustering algorithm does not guarantee the best clustering result. To address the above issues, this paper proposes an Initialization-Similarity (IS) algorithm which learns the similarity matrix and the new representation in a unified way and fixes initialization using the sum-of-norms regularization to make the clustering more robust. The experimental results on ten real-world benchmark datasets demonstrate that our IS clustering algorithm outperforms the comparison clustering algorithms in terms of three evaluation metrics for clustering algorithm including accuracy (ACC), normalized mutual information (NMI), and Purity.
- ItemMulti-task multi-modality SVM for early COVID-19 Diagnosis using chest CT data.(Elsevier Ltd, 2022-01) Hu R; Gan J; Zhu X; Liu T; Shi XIn the early diagnosis of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), it is of great importance for either distinguishing severe cases from mild cases or predicting the conversion time that mild cases would possibly convert to severe cases. This study investigates both of them in a unified framework by exploring the problems such as slight appearance difference between mild cases and severe cases, the interpretability, the High Dimension and Low Sample Size (HDLSS) data, and the class imbalance. To this end, the proposed framework includes three steps: (1) feature extraction which first conducts the hierarchical segmentation on the chest Computed Tomography (CT) image data and then extracts multi-modality handcrafted features for each segment, aiming at capturing the slight appearance difference from different perspectives; (2) data augmentation which employs the over-sampling technique to augment the number of samples corresponding to the minority classes, aiming at investigating the class imbalance problem; and (3) joint construction of classification and regression by proposing a novel Multi-task Multi-modality Support Vector Machine (MM-SVM) method to solve the issue of the HDLSS data and achieve the interpretability. Experimental analysis on two synthetic and one real COVID-19 data set demonstrated that our proposed framework outperformed six state-of-the-art methods in terms of binary classification and regression performance.
- ItemProtein and Lipid Digestibility of Pasture-Raised and Grain-Finished Beef: An In Vitro Comparison(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2023-03-14) Kaur L; Elamurugan A; Chian FM; Zhu X; Boland M; Gagaoua MThis study compared the digestibility of protein and fat components of pasture-raised and grain-finished beef using an in vitro oral-gastro-small intestinal digestion model. Two commonly consumed beef cuts, tenderloin (Psoas major) and striploin (Longissimus dorsi) were selected for this study. There were no substantial differences between the pasture-raised and grain-finished cuts of meat in terms of protein digestibility, as shown by the protein and peptide breakdown (observed through SDS-PAGE) and the degree of hydrolysis as measured by free amino nitrogen. Tenderloin, however, showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher overall protein digestibility than striploin. Both striploin and tenderloin digests from pasture-raised beef released significantly (p < 0.05) higher total amounts of free long-chain n-3 PUFAs and lower amounts of many free saturated fatty acids, notably palmitic and myristic acids, than those from grain-finished animals. The results suggest greater health benefits from consuming pasture-raised beef, particularly tenderloin.
