This paper examines the integration of One Health principles into global health education, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative pedagogical approaches. It evaluates various teaching methods, including problem-based learning (PBL), team-based learning (TBL), simulation-based education (SBE), case-based learning (CBL), interdisciplinary workshops and seminars (IWS), and service-learning (SL), analyzing their strengths and weaknesses in fostering interdisciplinary understanding and practical application of One Health concepts. While these methods enhance learning by promoting critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world application, they also face challenges such as resource constraints, variability in group dynamics, and the complexity of assessing long-term learning outcomes. The paper also discusses the role of global partnerships, such as the Global One Health Research Partnership (GOHRP), in advancing One Health education through collaborative research and educational initiatives. Addressing challenges in curriculum integration and interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial for the effective implementation of One Health education, ensuring that future health professionals are equipped to tackle complex global health challenges.
- ItemEffect of iron-manganese oxide on the degradation of deoxynivalenol in feed and enhancement of growth performance and intestinal health in weaned piglets.(Elsevier B.V., 2024-10-28) Wu C; Song J; Liu X; Zhang Y; Zhou Z; Thomas DG; Wu B; Yan X; Li J; Zhang R; Wu F; Cheng C; Pu X; Wang XDeoxynivalenol (DON), a prevalent and highly toxic mycotoxin in animal feed, poses significant risks to livestock health and productivity. This study evaluates the effectiveness of iron-manganese oxide (Fe/Mn oxides) in degrading DON. The DON degradation rate of Fe/Mn oxide reached 98.46 % in a controlled solution under specific conditions (0.2 % concentration, 37-85 °C, pH 6-7, 1-minute reaction time). When applied to actual feed, it reduced DON levels by approximately 49.3 % and remained stable in simulated gastrointestinal environments of weaned piglets. A 28-day trial involving 48 weaned piglets assessed the impacts of Fe/Mn oxides on health and growth. Results indicated that piglets consuming contaminated feed without the treatment exhibited reduced growth and compromised gut integrity, which were significantly mitigated by the addition of Fe/Mn oxides. Therefore, Fe/Mn oxides effectively reduce DON in feed and alleviate adverse health effects in piglets, making them a viable option to enhance safety and performance in mycotoxin-prone environments.
- ItemStructure-Function Characterisation of Eop1 Effectors from the Erwinia-Pantoea Clade Reveals They May Acetylate Their Defence Target through a Catalytic Dyad.(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2023-09-28) Tomar V; Rikkerink EHA; Song J; Sofkova-Bobcheva S; Bus VGM; Bhadauria V; Zhao WThe YopJ group of acetylating effectors from phytopathogens of the genera Pseudomonas and Ralstonia have been widely studied to understand how they modify and suppress their host defence targets. In contrast, studies on a related group of effectors, the Eop1 group, lag far behind. Members of the Eop1 group are widely present in the Erwinia-Pantoea clade of Gram-negative bacteria, which contains phytopathogens, non-pathogens and potential biocontrol agents, implying that they may play an important role in agroecological or pathological adaptations. The lack of research in this group of YopJ effectors has left a significant knowledge gap in their functioning and role. For the first time, we perform a comparative analysis combining AlphaFold modelling, in planta transient expressions and targeted mutational analyses of the Eop1 group effectors from the Erwinia-Pantoea clade, to help elucidate their likely activity and mechanism(s). This integrated study revealed several new findings, including putative binding sites for inositol hexakisphosphate and acetyl coenzyme A and newly postulated target-binding domains, and raises questions about whether these effectors function through a catalytic triad mechanism. The results imply that some Eop1s may use a catalytic dyad acetylation mechanism that we found could be promoted by the electronegative environment around the active site.
- ItemThe LONELY GUY gene family: from mosses to wheat, the key to the formation of active cytokinins in plants(John Wiley and Sons Ltd on behalf of the Society for Experimental Biology and The Association of Applied Biologists, 2022-04-07) Chen L; Jameson GB; Guo Y; Song J; Jameson PELONELY GUY (LOG) was first identified in a screen of rice mutants with defects in meristem maintenance. In plants, LOG codes for cytokinin riboside 5'-monophosphate phosphoribohydrolase, which converts inactive cytokinin nucleotides directly to the active free bases. Many enzymes with the PGGxGTxxE motif have been misannotated as lysine decarboxylases; conversely not all enzymes containing this motif are cytokinin-specific LOGs. As LOG mutants clearly impact yield in rice, we investigated the LOG gene family in bread wheat. By interrogating the wheat (Triticum aestivum) genome database, we show that wheat has multiple LOGs. The close alignment of TaLOG1, TaLOG2 and TaLOG6 with the X-ray structures of two functional Arabidopsis thaliana LOGs allows us to infer that the wheat LOGs 1-11 are functional LOGs. Using RNA-seq data sets, we assessed TaLOG expression across 70 tissue types, their responses to various stressors, the pattern of cis-regulatory elements (CREs) and intron/exon patterns. TaLOG gene family members are expressed variously across tissue types. When the TaLOG CREs are compared with those of the cytokinin dehydrogenases (CKX) and glucosyltransferases (CGT), there is close alignment of CREs between TaLOGs and TaCKXs reflecting the key role of CKX in maintaining cytokinin homeostasis. However, we suggest that the main homeostatic mechanism controlling cytokinin levels in response to biotic and abiotic challenge resides in the CGTs, rather than LOG or CKX. However, LOG transgenics and identified mutants in rice variously impact yield, providing interesting avenues for investigation in wheat.
