- ItemA comprehensive simulation platform for switched reluctance generator system(World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society, 2012) Arifin A; Al-Bahadly I; Mukhopadhyay SC; Topalis, FV; Dias, EMA Switched Reluctance Generator (SRG) system normally encompasses three main components: SR machine, controller and converter. On-going research on simulation and modelling of SRG system has focused on one component. There is a lack of a more comprehensive approach which integrates all three components into one simulation platform. We have developed a simulation model comprising SR machine, control and converter using MATLAB/Simulink. The main advantage of a simulation model is to reduce time and cost by having to perform changes on the prototype machine. In this paper, the work is focused on developing the optimal control algorithm for the platform. Optimal parameters are identified and characterized in terms of highest percentage of power generated. From simulation, the most influential parameters affecting the power generated are the firing angles and voltage level. So, a function relating the optimized parameter with machine performance was developed. The proposed control technique will provide easy implementation and ensure high machine performance. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by simulation results. The work will aid in development of SRG by providing a platform to determine the best generating operation before real implementation, reducing manufacturing time and cost.
- ItemA low-cost sensing system for quality monitoring of dairy products(IEEE, 2006) Mukhopadhyay SC; Gooneratne CP; Sen Gupta G; Demidenko SNThe dairy industry is in need of a cost-effective, highly reliable, very accurate, and fast measurement system to monitor the quality of dairy products. This paper describes the design and fabrication works undertaken to develop such a system. The techniques used center around planar electromagnetic sensors operating with radio frequency excitation. Computer-aided computation, being fast, facilitates on-line monitoring of the quality. The sensor technology proposed has the ability to perform volumetric penetrative measurements to measure properties throughout the bulk of the product. © 2006 IEEE.
- ItemCharacterization and comparative evaluation of novel planar electromagnetic sensors(IEEE Magnetics Society, 2005) Mukhopadhyay SC; Gooneratne CP; Sen Gupta G; Yamada SThe characterization of three types of novel planar electromagnetic sensors: 1) meander; 2) mesh; and 3) interdigital configuration, has been studied and their comparative performance has been evaluated based on their areas of applications. All of them are suitable for inspection and evaluation of system properties without destroying them. The experiments on fabricated sensors have been conducted and the results are presented here. The target application is to use a mixture of different types of sensors to detect plastic landmines. © 2005 IEEE.
- ItemExperimental determination of optimum coil pitch for a planar mesh type micro-magnetic sensor(IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 2002) Mukhopadhyay SC; Yamada S; Iwahara MTo overcome the directional properties of a planar meander-type sensor, a new planar micromagetic sensor having mesh-type configuration is reported in this paper. Analytical models are usually used for the characterization of the planar-type sensors. Sensors having mesh-type configuration have been fabricated for the derivation of the optimum coil pitch.
